First the syllabus, then the chatbot

Start from the official syllabus, exam format and required readings. Divide topics in a table: what you need to know, which materials you have, what is missing. You can ask AI to help order this inventory, but check it does not remove parts of the syllabus or add unrelated ones. A neat plan is of little use if it prepares for the wrong exam.

One chapter at a time, with the source beside it

Work on excerpts you can share and give clear names to documents. Ask for an explanation of the concept, an example and a link to another course topic. Encourage the system to indicate what it does not find in the materials. If it refers to a page, open it: the generated reference does not guarantee the content is present. Note doubts and discrepancies to clarify with book or teacher.

Recall, don’t just reread

Close the summary and try to reconstruct the concept unaided. You can ask for one question at a time, answer and only then compare with the material. Learning research supports active recall and distributed review; this does not prove that any chatbot improves study. It is the exercise that matters, not the amount of generated text.

Distribute review and correct the plan

As an organisational example, revisit a topic the next day, a few days later and the following week. This is not a universal schedule: increase intervals only when you can explain and apply the concept. Keep a list of errors, distinguishing memory errors from comprehension errors. Dedicate more time to the latter.

Arrive at the test without crutches

In the final reviews alternate definition questions, comparisons and exercises consistent with the exam. Also simulate the available time. AI can offer indicative feedback, not predict the grade or replace the teacher’s correction. During a graded test use only permitted tools.

01 / A PRACTICAL CASE

Try it in your session.

You have twelve chapters and three weeks. First, check which chapters are included in the syllabus; then build sessions with reading, vocal explanation and questions. If a topic remains unclear, update the plan instead of asking for an even shorter summary.

02 / THE PROMPT TO ADAPT

Let's prepare a study plan for [subject], [oral/written] exam on [date]. I have [time] per day. I will provide the syllabus and list of materials I can share. First identify any missing information. Organise sessions with comprehension, exercises, recall without notes and reviews. Do not add external topics without indicating it. Ask me to confirm priorities before the final plan.

03 / NOW, WITHOUT AI

The reasoning remains yours.

Choose a random topic, explain it for two minutes and apply it to a new example. Only then reopen the book and note omissions and errors.
